Professional Profile of Kim K. Shirin, Ph.D.

With over 20 years of counseling experience, Dr. Shirin brings a wealth of expertise to his patients. Before establishing his private practice two decades ago, he served as a consultant to the Skid Row Project at the L.A. County Department of Health, providing crisis intervention, psychotherapy, and psychological testing. Currently, he is on the staff at Verdugo Hills Hospital and Aurora-Las Encinas Hospital.

Areas of expertise

Dr. Shirin’s treatment approach is eclectic, incorporating elements of Gestalt, cognitive, hypnosis, psychoanalytic, and behavioral therapy. He holds a Ph.D. from the Cambridge Graduate School of Psychology, along with M.S. and B.S. degrees from the University of Southern California. His additional training includes Neuropsychology, Hypnotherapy, and certification as a Child Custody Evaluator.

Kim K. Shirin, Ph.D. is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California since 1982, whose main office is located in the Los Angeles area. He received his undergraduate degree in Biological Science/ Genetics, in 1975, and received his Master’s degree in Psychology in 1982 both from the University of Southern California (USC), and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology Assessment from Cambridge Graduate School of Psychology in 1989. Dr. Shirin did his clinical psychology internship with Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. Dr. Shirin has been on the list of approved 730/3111 Child Custody Evaluators since 2000.
Dr. Shirin has conducted over 300 Child Custody Evaluations by appointment of the Superior Court of California in the Counties of Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, Kern, San Diego, Ventura, Orange and Fresno for over 25 years. Dr. Shirin has offices located from Fresno to San Diego Counties. Dr. Shirin also performs 733 Evaluations in all the counties listed above and has testified numerous times in these Counties regarding Family Law matters. Dr. Shirin performs consultations in reviewing of records, reviewing expert reports and evaluations along with consulting in Family Law cases.
Dr. Shirin brings to his patients more than 30 years of counseling experience. Prior to establishing his private practice thirty years ago, he served the Los Angeles County Department of Health as a consultant to the Skid Row Project, where he provided crisis intervention, psychotherapy and psychological testing.

Dr. Shirin has presented many seminars and workshops on topics such as Building Self-Esteem, Dealing with Depression, Teenage Suicide, Effective Parenting, Establishing a Good Marriage, and Overcoming Anxiety, Role of Psychological Testing in Child Custody Evaluations, Coercive Control Dynamics, and Alienation. Audiences include the Roger Barkley Community Center, La Canada Flintridge Rotary, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, St. Bede School, St. James the Less School,
Crescenta Valley High School, La Canada High School, St. Francis High School and the Medical Staff of Verdugo Hills-USC Hospital. Along with guest speaker at USC, various Law groups and California Desert Trial Academy College of Law.

Dr. Shirin’s professional memberships include the American Psychological Association, American Academy of Medical Hypnoanalysts, Anxiety Disorders Association, California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, California Psychological Association, Los Angeles Psychological Association and the National Board for Certified Hypnotherapists.
